Unit 1: Understanding Drug Use: Facts, Effects, Symptoms and Attitudes

In this unit, you will learn about a range of substances that can be misused and their street names. You will learn about reasons why some people misuse substances and the methods of substance use and the paraphernalia associated with the different methods.

Unit 2: Understanding Alcohol and Drug Use in Young People

In this unit, you will learn about the effects of alcohol and substance misuse on the physical, emotional and psychological health of young people. You will also be able to identify risks to their welfare and to their relationships when misusing substances. You will also learn about the many sources of help and information for young people on substance misuse and explain the key differences between them.

Unit 3: Understanding Responses to Substance Misuse: Legislation, Harm Reduction and Interventions

In this unit, you will learn about the legislation which relates to substance misuse and describe the difference between legal and illegal drugs and the class and schedule systems used for classification of substances. You will also learn how to describe the ‘Cycle of Change’ model as developed by J. Prochaska and C. DiClemente.
